Site Update

The Drupal software was updated to version 5.x just now. I'd been putting this off for a while. Partly because I was scared I might royally muck it up (but I was careful with backups), and partly because we have dozens of modules installed that need to be updated separately, and some of them won't have 5.x-compatible versions.

But the update went fine, and I now have the dubious pleasure of installing the modules, one by one, to restore all the functionality of the site.

And a few new ones, too. BBCode, for example, which will hopefully put a stop to the constant site-breaking from unclosed tags.

Regarding blogroll:

Yes, I know you've waited for this for nearly half a year. I'm sorry. I'm working on it. Please be patient for a few more days. Also, some input would be appreciated (read more below)

I've had a few ideas on how to make the thing a bit less bloated and a bit more useful for actual navigation (as opposed to search engine ranking). Most of them involve limiting the number of links displayed.

  • Recently updated sites. Combined with our feed aggregator, it would be possible to display the twenty most recently updated blogs in a list. These links would be the most interesting to surfers, and the list would be shorter than the huge thing there is now.
  • Popular sites. Since the blog roll is displayed with a javascript snippet, it could act as an internal visitor counter. The sites that have the most visitors could then be listed in a top twenty ranking and displayed to others.
  • Random. Also a "top twenty" selection of sites, only these ones would be randomly picked from the total number of sites.
  • Categories. Each member would pick one of a number of categories, and the links displayed on their site would be only the ones in their category.

I'm still open to suggestions. Please note that I'm a newbie when it comes to managing (though so far, "mucking about" is more like it) something of this size, so bear with me while I get used to it.
